Odisha also known as Orissa, is an Indian state on the subcontinent's east coast. Odisha is the 9th largest state by area in India, and the 11th largest by population.The fine engravings on brass and bellmetal (Dhokra / Lost Wax Casting) utensils, bronze bangles and pots are important aspects of Orissan art. Artefacts made of metal, particolarly brass, find pride of place in the homes of Orissa. Silverware of Orissa is very widely known. The artists of Cuttack have also invariably contributed to enrich their tradition in the form of an art known as Silver Filigree. Orissa's Filigree works particularly are unique examples of artistic excellence rarely to be seen in any other part of India. Patta chitras are miniature paintings, used as wall hangings with religious themes as their subject matter. Legends from the lives of Lord Krishna are mainly depicted on this specially treated cloth known as Patta.  Applique is a technique by which the decorative effect is obtained by superposing patches of coloured fabrics on a basic fabric, the edges of the patches being sewn in some form of stitchery. One of the most ancient crafts of the world, etching and paintings on the palm leaf still thrives in the state of Orissa in India. Called Talapatrachitras / Palmleaf Engravig there, the art has reached new heights there. The palm leaf etchings are treasured decorations of all Indian home. Stone carving is yet another artform practiced widely in Orissa and the artisans of Orissa are famous for making huge and mammoth stone statutes along with with small decorative items.
