This beautiful articraft makes us wonder, how talented can our artisans be? This is perhaps one complex artifact created out of Dhokra Craft or Bell Metal Casting. Hence we thought that we should present this to you and show how difficult it can be and how our artisans are executing it perfectly.

A cart perfectly conceived, designed and crafted with two Tribal men on it. One being the poor cart driver and other a rich landlord. The complex design has been so beautifully created that its takes the look of fascinating simplicity. The golden designing work on the shade of the cart gives it a unique look all together. The horse looks cute and sweet. Just to remind you, Dhokra dies are all hand made and it doesn’t go thru multiple iteration and hence it’s impossible to produce two look alike sculptures out of Dhokra. Reproducing the same artifact time and again with significant amount of similarity among the pieces is the skill of this master craft man. The deep brown copper coating enhances its beauty endlessly. After all, imagination has no boundaries and skills have no limitations.

Dhokra art is one of the earliest known methods of non-ferrous metal casting known to human civilization. This sort of metal casting has been used in India for over 4,000 years and is still being used.  Currently this craft form is prevailing mostly in to the States of Pashim Banga, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand of India. On a relatively unknown basis this craft form is also prevailing in the southern states of India and some villages of Himanchal Pradesh.  A very fine example of this very traditional & ancient art is the dancing girl of mohenjo-daro.

Dhokra art is totally handmade and completely unique. It is made of Brass as base metal used with bell metal and other alloys. The special quality of these handicrafts is that it does not have any joints. It comes in one piece as a whole. Since each and every piece of this artifact is being casted using a new handmade mold, hence each and every piece differs from each other.  They will just not resemble each other completely. Here lies the exclusiveness of dhokra craft.

For more detailed information about this ancient art, please refer to our Art & Craft Section of website.
