Ganesha with Mahabharat - Dhokra Statue

^{Lord Ganesha is one of the most popular Gods in India. You can see various facets of him in different forms of Art. Kids consider him as their friend “Bal Ganesh “and adults consider him as “Vinayaka, Ganapati and Pillaiyar”. Over the years artisans have taken inspiration from this deity and have very skillfully carved, painted, sculpted, embossed etc. him, in different moods, pose and forms.  Depicted above is a sculpture of Standing Ganesha holding and reading “Mahabharata” (Hindi – महाभारत). Just to recollect, it was Ganesha who helped Saint Ved Vyas to write “Mahabharata” (Hindi – महाभारत), one of two epics of ancient India.}  

^{This beautiful Dhokra sculpture is also one of the many creations that are based on lord Ganesh. It is a very fine example of Dhokra Art. As you may know Dhokra Art form of sculpture needs a new die every time you make a sculpture and a fresh handmade die needs to be made for repetitive process. Amazing that the master craftsmen has mastered the process so well that each and every piece would be coming out pretty close to the previous one. The overall golden touch the sculpture is getting out of brass is making it look a perfect piece of home décor. The finishing is remarkable and we would like to follow the measurement the artifacts, it’s not tiny but relatively small and that’s where bringing perfection in terms finishing and overall looks becomes very difficult. ^{Dhokra art is one of the earliest known methods of non-ferrous metal casting known to human civilization. This sort of metal casting has been used in India for over 4,000 years and is still being used.  Currently this craft form is prevailing mostly in to the States of Pashim Banga, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand of India. On a relatively unknown basis this craft form is also prevailing in the southern states of India and some villages of Himanchal Pradesh.  A very fine example of this very traditional & ancient art is the dancing girl of mohenjo-daro.}

^{Dhokra art is totally handmade and completely unique. It is made of Brass as base metal used with bell metal and other alloys. The special quality of these handicrafts is that it does not have any joints. It comes in one piece as a whole. Since each and every piece of this artifact is being casted using a new handmade mold, hence each and every piece differs from each other.  They will just not resemble each other completely. Here lies the exclusiveness of dhokra craft.}
