Emblematic Mahaveer - Betelnut Sculpture

Lord Mahavir One of the greatest prophets of peace and social reformation. Symbol of peace and harmony and depict love and care to everyone, whose philosophies continue to inspire numerous people even today. Lord Mahavir was the one who established what are today considered to be the central tenets of Jainism. According to Jain tradition, he was the 24th and the last Tirthankara. Lord Mahavir continuously preached about the five strengths that any human being should try to achieve and those are,

• Nonviolence (Ahimsa) – to cause no harm to any living being;
• Truthfulness (Satya) – to speak the harmless truth only;
• Non-stealing (Asteya) – to take nothing not properly given;
• Chastity (Bramacharya) – to indulge in no sensual pleasure;
• Non-possession/Non-attachment (Aparigraha) – to detach completely from people, places, and material things.

This sculpture measuring around 5 inch in height is made of Beetelnut. This is what we call an sacred sculpture with perhaps one is the most sacred object to perform any ritual in Hindu religion. Shown here is Lord Mahavir in the meditation pose.

Beetalnut carving is an old artform from India which is on the verge of getting extinct as very few artisans families have left working on this art form. We at Komoli are trying to make this art form popular again and wish to develop good marketing platform for them so that the artisans make more money and continue with their passion & hobbies.
