State of Rajasthan, India

Rajasthan known as "the land of kings" is the largest state of the Republic of India by area and its the eigth most populous state of India. Raja Man Singh of Amer brought intricate craft of Meenakari to Jaipur by inviting five skilled enamel workers from Lahore. The art prospered over the years and is today renowed the world over. Rajasthan is rich in jewellery, each area having its own unique style. Some of the traditional designs are rakhri, timaniyan, bala, bajuband, gajra, gokhru, jod, etc. Statues on religious themes are stone carved all over Rajasthan and in several cities there are still entire lanes where the stone carvers can be seen giving final touches to statues or even pillars. Fine quality of marble and sandstone sculptors are created by the best stone masons and sculptor. Deities of the god and goddesses are carved out very intrinsically. The whole of Rajasthan get coloured with its vibrant textiles. Cotton is produced by the Julaha caste known as Masuria. Shekhawati is an important centre for wood carving. Finely wrought doors, window panes, pidas or the low folding chairs with decorative carvings, latticed screen windows are found in the region. Rajasthan has its main ivory carving centres at Udaipur, Bharatpur and Jaipur from where master ivory carvers were once favoured by the royal courts. While Jaipur was famous for its carved ivory, Jodhpur specialized in ivory bangles. Bandhani or Tie and Dye of Rajasthan, is the technique involves two stages: tying sections of a length of cloth (silk or cotton) and then dunking it into vats of colour. The rainbow-tinged turbans of the Rajputs and the odhnis of their women are shaded by this method of resist dyeing.  Rajasthan has a long and distinguished traditon of printing with finely carved wooden blocks. Zari is gold, and zardozi embroidery of Rajasthan is the glitteringly ornate, heavily encrusted gold thread work practiced in Jaipur and a few other cities of India. Blue Pottery originated in Persia and came into vogue in Rajasthan during the times of Maharaja Ram Singhji who patronized this novel art. Distinctive materials like quartz stone were used to bring in the desired effect.
